“If we are serious about not leaving our children, or adolescents, behind, we need to help young people see how their learning can help them build, negotiate, understand and take constructive actions in the world.”
—Ruth Vinz, Director, Morse Center for the Professional Education of Teachers

About SPI

The Student Press Initiative is designed to develop, foster, and promote writing across the curriculum through student publication.

SPI is built upon the premise that writing for publication provides young people with authentic audiences. When students realize the power and potential of an audience of their peers and the community at large, writing becomes purposeful thereby inspiring them to produce their best work. We believe that when a young writer finds an audience, she will find her voice.

What makes SPI’s publishing program unique is its emphasis on professional development and curricular support of teachers in its partnering schools. This is not another school literary magazine model highlighting the success of an already-acknowledged academic elite. SPI builds publication-rich school communities where every student is encouraged to publish out of one or more of his disciplines. In SPI’s model of teaching writing for publication, students learn imperative skills in drafting, revising and copyediting through real-life models of working. Publication provides the motivation for students to succeed. SPI provides professional development that makes that success possible.
